Life & Career

Biography

Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar was born on April 24, 1973, in Mumbai (then Bombay), India, and was named after his family's favourite music director, Sachin Dev Burman. Introduced to cricket at the age of 11 by coach Ramakant Achrekar at Shivaji Park, Tendulkar quickly showed prodigious talent. In 1988, he and his schoolmate Vinod Kambli shared an unbroken 664-run partnership in a Harris Shield inter-school match, a record that still stands. At just 16 years and 205 days old, he made his Test debut against Pakistan in Karachi on November 15, 1989, becoming one of the youngest players to represent India. During that series, he was struck on the nose by a Waqar Younis bouncer but refused to leave the crease, signalling the fierce determination that would define his career.

Over a 24-year international career spanning from 1989 to 2013, Tendulkar rewrote cricket's record books. He accumulated 15,921 runs in 200 Test matches and 18,426 runs in 463 ODIs, becoming the leading run-scorer in both formats of the game. His 100 international centuries -- 51 in Tests and 49 in ODIs -- remain an unmatched milestone that no other cricketer has come close to achieving. On February 24, 2010, he scored 200 not out against South Africa at Gwalior, becoming the first player in history to score a double century in ODI cricket. He was a key member of India's 2011 Cricket World Cup-winning squad, finally lifting the trophy at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai -- a moment that fulfilled a lifelong dream and brought a nation of over a billion people to tears of joy.

Tendulkar retired from international cricket in November 2013, playing his 200th and final Test match at his home ground, the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, against the West Indies. His farewell speech, delivered with tears in his eyes, moved the entire cricketing world. Beyond statistics, Tendulkar's impact transcended the sport -- he inspired generations of cricketers across the subcontinent and united a diverse nation through his batting. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour, in 2014, becoming the youngest recipient and the first sportsperson to receive it. He was also nominated to the Rajya Sabha (India's upper house of parliament) and was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2019.
